Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, is demanding the release of U.S. government documents that may reveal connections between risky research projects funded by the U.S. and the origins of COVID-19. Paul has been requesting these records for several years due to concerns that the SARS-CoV-2 virus may have been created through “gain of function” experiments. He believes that the public should have access to and review all research related to COVID-19, whether it was funded in China or the United States. To compel the current administration to release these records, Paul has vowed to block President Joe Biden’s nominees and legislation.
No Republican in government has gone after Anthony Fauci more aggressively than Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, and he is not done yet.

“I’m in the process of blocking nominations, of blocking legislation, if they will not help me to get records. And so this is going on in two major committees that I’m on: the Foreign Relations Committee as well as the Homeland Security,” he said. “I’m telling you, I’m not letting anything pass unanimously, I’m blocking everything until you finally turn over some of these records on COVID.”…

…“One thing we discovered and has not been reported, I think, very extensively, is that [National Institutes of Health] money is going to American universities and then being subcontracted to military research in China,” he said, referring to China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS). “So it’s military research.”
Paul pointed out some evidence that suggests a potential lab origin of COVID-19, such as the unique spike protein of the virus and a 2018 research proposal by the EcoHealth Alliance, which sought to insert a specific feature into a bat coronavirus. While the proposal was rejected, Paul questions the coincidence between the proposal and the presence of the same feature in the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Additionally, Senator Joni Ernst, a Republican from Iowa, published a report indicating that Chinese organizations received $490 million in U.S. government research grants and contracts since 2017, with most of the funding coming through subcontracts and subgrants. Ernst’s report suggests that federal officials failed to closely monitor the flow of funds to Chinese entities, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). Rand Paul has alleged that some of the Chinese entities that received U.S. funding were involved in military research.
These claims and demands for transparency are part of ongoing discussions about the origins of COVID-19 and the potential role of research activities in both China and the United States.
